Founded in 1917 by the Russian Emperor, Georgia Technical University (GTU) is one of the oldest universities in Georgia and the Caucasus region. Initially established as the Applied Technical College of Tbilisi State University in 1922, it became an independent institution in 1928 under the name Georgian Polytechnic Institute (GPI).
By the 1970s, GTU expanded significantly, incorporating more faculties, with 15 full-time and 13 part-time faculties, and was recognized as a leading higher education institution in the Soviet Union (1985-1987). By this period, it was the largest higher education institution in the Caucasus, hosting 40,000 students and 5,000 faculty members.
In 1990, GPI gained university status and was renamed Georgia Technical University (GTU). The university implemented significant curriculum reforms, including adopting the credit-based system (120 British credits), and introduced eight faculties after organizational restructuring in 2005.
GTU provides a rich blend of tradition and innovation, offering students access to a high-quality education and a multicultural environment that prepares them for global opportunities.
